How do you recognize the difference between sleep regression and sleep problems?

What is sleep regression?
Sleep regression is a temporary phase in which your child suddenly sleeps worse, often around 4, 8, 12 or 18 months. This usually coincides with developmental leaps such as learning to roll over, crawl or talk. Your child may be restless, wake up more often and have trouble falling or staying asleep. This phase usually lasts 2 to 6 weeks.
What are sleep problems?
Sleep problems are structural in nature. They arise, for example, from an irregular sleep pattern, incorrect sleep associations or tension. In contrast to sleep regression, they usually do not improve on their own and often persist for months if nothing changes in the approach.

Regression is often linked to development, sleep problems usually have external causes.
What can you do?
